BIO

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Micah has always led a life in the arts. Playing cello from a young age, studying creative writing and jazz vocal technique throughout their early education, and practicing photography in their spare time, a comprehensive interest in aesthetic production has always been at the center of Micah’s life. Starting dance training in Seattle at 13, these prior creative influences enabled them to progress quickly through early training while immediately diving into more creative work through choreography.

Under the tutelage of local artists Alicia Mullikin, Noel Price-Bracey and Marlo Martin, Micah developed a grounded physicality and an authentic, somatically based approach to movement. At the Cornish College of the Arts preparatory dance program Micah studied ballet technique with Pat Hon and Christina Kennedy. Since 2021, Micah has enjoyed pursuing a BFA in Dance and a minor in Art History at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University. There they have been learning modern technique from danah bella and Diedre Dawkins (Horton), ballet from Christopher Pennix and Laura Hamilton, and Countertechnique from Kelly Hirina, as well as improvisation, instant composition and choreography also from Hirina.

While in school, Micah has performed works by faculty and guest artists in a variety of styles, including contemporary work by Kelly Hirina, Peter Pattengill and Mike Esperanza, jazz by Jess Beach, and butoh by Azumi Oe. They have also performed in several student works by peer and collaborator Eon Allum.

The primary focus of Micah’s education has been creative development. With supportive mentorship from Kelly Hirina in the disciplines of creative process and composition, Micah has created six contemporary dance works in the first three years of their studies. These works have engaged with dance and art history, drawing inspiration from iconic dance artists like Pina Bausch and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker as well as visual artists Joan Mitchell and Isamu Noguchi. These experiences have fostered a hunger for creative process and a deep respect for the creativity and intelligence of dancers–the ultimate joy of dance for Micah is the chance to collaborate creatively with other thoughtful and dedicated artists.
